Avengers star Mark Ruffalo says actors should “jump into indies” to create more competition in Hollywood.

According to Deadline, SAG-AFTRA will offer waivers in the form of an ‘Interim Agreement’ to “truly independent” productions during the ongoing actors’ strike, and Ruffalo believe this offers actors a unique opportunity.

“How about we all jump into indies now?” he said on Twitter. “Content creators create a film and TV-making system alongside the studio and streaming networks? So, there is actual competition.”

The ‘Interim Agreement’ lets independent productions continue despite the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, which stops all guild members from undertaking any kind of production activity. According to the SAG-AFTRA website: “For independently produced content that comes within the scope of a strike order (the above-mentioned contracts), the producer may qualify for an ‘Interim Agreement’ that would allow such productions to continue working during a strike.”

However, Ruffalo sees this as a further opportunity to stick it to the studio system. “We just do what we always do — create great content and they can buy it, or we take it out ourselves and WE share in those sales,” he said. “They’ve created an empire of billionaires and believe that we are no longer of value. While they hang out in the billionaire boy summer camps laughing like fat cats, we organize a new world for workers.”

Disney CEO Bob Iger recently came under fire for saying the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA writers’ strikes have an expectation that is ‘not realistic’. However, Ruffalo seems to see this as a pivotal moment.

“One sure way to strengthen our hand right now is to become very supportive and friendly to all independent projects immediately,” he said. “Push every SAG-AFTRA member to join the ones that get SAG-AFTRA (WGA) WAIVERS immediately. The studios have no competition — this will change that.

“Share profits. If the project does well, everyone does well. This will also help our fellow filmmakers, ‘The Crew,’ who we love, to keep working. This is also part of Solidarity. We have to take care of each other.”

while the WGA and SAG-AFTRA are on strike, production and support staff in two different parts of the mouse, Disney Animation Studios and 20th Century TV Animation, have been campaigning to be included in the Animation Guild with their animator and writer colleagues. companies like disney try to falsely segment certain workers in industries off, saying they are too different and wont recognize them as a part of the union, as a union busting tactic. it’s been MONTHS for one group and over a YEAR for another, that disney has ignored them. they’re asking for people to sign two petitions and talk about it online:

production workers deserve protections the same as animators and writers and ALL of them are further protected and can do better work if they can organize together. spread the word!

Look. I have literally no horse in this race when it comes to the WGA/SAG Hollywood strike. I do not watch enough TV or movies to be affected and I’m not a part of the industry. I really haven’t cared.

As a lawyer and orchardist, however, I am now utterly entranced by the fact that some Universal Studios exec thought it was a good idea to cut down city-owned trees in the middle of summer.

There is no way to get around the absolute clusterfuck they have brought down upon themselves.

CGI animators should unionize next. normally, their jobs would be too precarious to strike, since studios would replace them without a second thought, but if it's part of this larger general film strike, they might finally have meaningful power to better their working conditions

studentofetherium

if CGI animators unionized, it would kill the MCU. straight up. the the entire business model is built on exploiting CGI animators

It's funny but incredibly telling how entitled/ignorant/insensitive some of these people are... idk if it's an education gap or purposeful ignorance.

The really bewildering thing to me is that I remember when you needed to get up and pull a dictionary off the shelf, or visit a library to look up the facts you needed. Now people have all kinds of information literally at their fingertips and they can’t be bothered to use it.

my writing fundamentally changed forever ten years ago when i realized you could use sentence structure to control people’s heart rates. is this still forbidden knowledge or does everyone know it now

dreamtofswallowingcoins

??????
*raises hand* I’ve been writing for years and don’t know this trick by these words!
do tell?

abalonetea

Okay, so a few people have asked for me to cite the dark magics at them, and i’m super happy to share because it’s my favorite thing ever.

so, let’s see if i can explain this the same way that i learned. read a sentence out loud. you come to a full stop when you hit the period, and you take a normal, breath. but, when you hit a comma, you take a slightly longer pause. and when you hit a dash - you take an even longer pause.

this is a natural rhythm that we pick up when we’re first taught to read; we do it without even thinking. but when you start to think about it, you realize that it can become a tool.

think of your heartbeat. a period is badump. a comma is badump-dump. and a dash is thump badump. one breath. a longer breath. two breaths.

that means what you read automatically affects the rhythm of your breathing and your heartrate. which means that you can control the amount of physical tension your reader feels… by altering your punction and your sentence structure.

for fast paced scenes, you use short sentences. a lot of hard stops. mostly periods, with just a few comma’s thrown in for the full breath. your reader’s heartrate accelerates. their breathing is slightly and unintentionally, on their end, quicker. you hit the dramatic ending of the scene - and your reader’s body phsyically feels the gasp, the breath of fresh air, of these longer sentences.

now, read that paragraph again ant take note of your natural pauses, and how it subtly affects your breathing.

the same thing can be said of comma’s and dashes. while they can be used as a breath of fresh air, they can also cause a new line of tension as they lead your reader to hold their breath. during this section, you should use longer sentences; breaking up the harshness of the pauses by using variations of punction. read this paragraph out loud from the start and take note of how long you go between pauses and full breaths.

and then, comes the biggest trick.

the hard stop.

the paragraph.

because while the periods, commas, and dashes are variations on a short stop, the paragraph is a hard stop. you take a full breath. you pause for a moment, then move to the start of the next paragraph.

which means you can create an entirely new sort of dramatic tension. read the sentences that are in bold. see how you take a naturally longer pause at the end of each paragraph?

see how it makes you feel?

how it makes you breath different?

how doing it once, twice, or three times creates a different line of tension?

this little magic trick can be used to cause a reader’s heartrate to speed up during a fight or chase scene. it can be used to cause their breathing to slow down during moments of dramatic tension, sorrow, or softness. and it can be used to create hard breaks that add a new level of physically felt emphasis to your written work.

i hope these examples make sense! it’s my favorite writing trick!
